In Ireland of the 1960’s, establishing a new indigenous industry was not for the faint hearted. Nor was it common practice for women entrepreneurs to challenge the status quo of the male dominated construction services sector. Yet that is exactly what Angela Collins O’Mahony set out to do in 1968 when, as a young mother from a small farming background in Co Clare, she, along with her husband John, founded Collins Steeplejacks.

As Ireland’s first female steeplejack she clearly had a head for heights and, as it transpired, business. A multiple accolade winner, she was Ireland’s inaugural winner of the prestigious Veuve Cliquot Irish Business Woman of the Year, a past winner of the Bowmaker Award for Irish Industry and was conferred with an honorary degree in recognition of her achievements. In continuous business for almost 50 years, her integration of strong family and business values has now been carried into the next generation of Collins Steeplejacks.
